Relations between planktivorous fish and zooplankton in two very shallow lakes of the Pampa Plain

چکیده

It is widely accepted that predation plays a critical role in determining zooplankton community structure in ponds and lakes. The relationship between fish planktivory and zooplankton species composition has been discussed since the early work of HRBACEK et al. (1961) and BROOKS & DODSON (1965). Size-selective predation by fish may produce changes in zooplankton community structure. Phenomena frequently attributed to heavy planktivory include the small individual size of cladocerans and the reduced representation of the vulnerable Daphnia sp. (BROOKS & DODSON 1965).

Tropic interactions in pampean shallow lakes: evaluation of silverside predatory effects in mesocosm experiments

Planktivorous fish directly suppress some prey species and indirectly affect species that interact with these prey (HRBACEK 1962, BROOKS & DODSON 1965, HALL et al. 1970, DRENNER et al. 1986). Visually feeding zooplanktivorous fish are size-selective predators, directly suppressing large zooplankton, and indirectly temporarily enhancing small zooplankton and phytoplankton (HURLBERT & MULLA 1981,...

The Impact of Fish Predation and Cyanobacteria on Zooplankton Size Structure in 96 Subtropical Lakes

Zooplankton are relatively small in size in the subtropical regions. This characteristic has been attributed to intense predation pressure, high nutrient loading and cyanobacterial biomass. To provide further information on the effect of predation and cyanobacteria on zooplankton size structure, we analyzed data from 96 shallow aquaculture lakes along the Yangtze River. Contrary to former studi...

Invertebrate predation and trophic cascades in a pe- lagic food web – The multiple roles of Chaoborus flavi- cans (Meigen) in a clay-turbid lake

Invertebrate predators often have dramatic effects on their prey communities. Unlike visually foraging planktivorous fish, invertebrate predators detect their prey by mechanoor chemoreception. Thus, fish and invertebrate predators affect zooplankton communities differently. Fish predation typically selects large cladocerans while invertebrate predators prefer prey of smaller size. Since inverte...

A review of nontraditional biomanipulation.

The aim of this review is to identify problems, find general patterns, and extract recommendations for successful management using nontraditional biomanipulation to improve water quality. There are many obstacles that prevent traditional biomanipulation from achieving expectations: expending largely to remove planktivorous fish, reduction of external and internal phosphorus, and macrophyte re-e...

Competition in zooplankton communities: Suppression of small species by Daphvlia pulex1

The hypothesis that a large zooplankton herbivore, Daphnia pulex, can competitively reduce the abundance of resident zooplankton when colonizing a community of small species was tested in two lakes. When introduced to enclosures in eutrophic Larimore Pond, D. pulex decreased phytoplankton abundance by an order of magnitude, resulting in drastically reduced densities of Tropocyclops prasinus and...
